Kids Halloween Costume Sizing Guide

Kids Halloween Costume Sizing Guide

Kids' costumes are sized differently from adult clothing, and kids grow fast. Here's how to get the right size so trick-or-treating night goes smoothly.

How Kids Costume Sizes Work

Kids costumes are typically sold in age-based ranges:

  • Toddler (2T-4T): Ages 2-4, typically fits heights 34"-42"
  • Child Small (4-6): Ages 4-6, typically fits heights 42"-48"
  • Child Medium (7-8): Ages 7-8, typically fits heights 48"-54"
  • Child Large (10-12): Ages 10-12, typically fits heights 54"-60"

These are general guidelines — actual measurements vary by brand. Always check the height and weight range on the product listing.

Measure Your Child First

Rather than shopping by age, use your child's height as your primary guide. Measure from the top of their head to the floor and compare to the height range on the product page.

Should I Size Up?

In most cases, yes. A slightly larger costume:

  • Can be worn over a warm layer on cold Halloween nights
  • Gives room for growth if you're buying a few weeks early
  • Is easier to walk and run in — important for trick-or-treating

Avoid sizing up more than one size though, as oversized costumes become a tripping hazard.

Safety First

  • Make sure the costume doesn't drag on the ground
  • Avoid full-face masks — opt for face paint instead so kids can see clearly
  • Choose flame-resistant materials when possible
