How to Clean and Store a Halloween Costume
Whether you're saving a costume for next year or just returning one that didn't work out, proper care keeps it in great shape.
Read the Label First
Before washing any costume, check the care label inside. Costume fabrics vary widely — polyester, velvet, satin, and foam all require different care. The label is your first and most reliable guide.
Spot Cleaning
For light stains, spot cleaning is usually the safest option. Use a damp cloth with a small amount of mild detergent and gently blot (don't rub) the stained area. Let it air dry completely before storing.
Hand Washing
Most fabric costumes can be hand washed in cold water with a gentle detergent. Gently squeeze (don't wring) the fabric and lay flat to dry. Avoid putting costumes in the dryer unless the label says it's safe — heat can warp embellishments, melt glue, or shrink fabric.
Machine Washing
If the label allows machine washing, use cold water on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Place the costume in a mesh laundry bag to protect delicate details. Air dry afterward.
Foam, Latex, and Accessories
Foam components, latex masks, and plastic accessories should never be machine washed. Wipe down with a damp cloth and a small amount of dish soap. For latex masks, use a latex conditioner to prevent cracking.
How to Store a Costume
- Make sure the costume is completely dry before storing — moisture causes mold and odors
- Store in a breathable garment bag or a clean pillowcase rather than a sealed plastic bag
- Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight (sunlight fades colors)
- Hang structured costumes on a padded hanger; fold soft ones loosely to avoid permanent creasing
- Store accessories and props with the costume in a labeled box so nothing goes missing
