How to Measure Yourself for a Costume
Getting the right costume size starts with accurate measurements. This guide walks you through how to measure yourself so your costume fits the first time.
What You'll Need
- A flexible measuring tape (the kind used for sewing)
- A mirror or a helper
- Form-fitting clothing or just undergarments for accuracy
The 3 Key Measurements
Chest
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it parallel to the floor. Don't pull it tight — leave a little breathing room.
Waist
Measure around your natural waistline, which is the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above your belly button.
Hips
Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, usually about 7-9 inches below your natural waist.
How to Use Your Measurements
Compare your chest, waist, and hip measurements to the size chart on the product page. If your measurements fall between two sizes, size up. Costumes are easier to pin or belt in than to let out.
Inseam (for full-body costumes)
For jumpsuits, full-body suits, or costumes with pants, you'll also want your inseam. Measure from your crotch to the floor along the inside of your leg.
Tips for Kids
Kids costumes are sized by age range but children vary widely. Measure your child's height and check the height guide on the product page for the most accurate fit. When in doubt, size up so they can wear it with clothing underneath.
